Castel Gandolfo is a small Italian town near Rome that lies on a hill overlooking lake Albano. It is best known as the summer residence of the Pope. The resort of the community includes almost the whole cost line of lake Albano which is surrounded by many summer residences, villas and cottages built during the 17th century. There are also several places of archaeologic interest, including the Emissario of the lake Albano, the remains of the villa of Domition. The area is included within the boundaries of the Regional Park of the Castelli Romani. Many points of artistic interest can be the Collegiate Church of St. Thomas , designated by Bernini Gian Lorenzo, and St. Nilus Abbey.
